The Best Homemade Tomato Sauce—Rich, Flavorful & So Simple

The Best Homemade Tomato you have ever tried.

Everyone loves tomato sauce, whether it’s with a snack, with a pakora, or with my favorite parotta. Everyone likes tomato sauce, but most people, even I, often buy it from the market. But why?

Homemade Tomato Sauce – A vibrant bowl of freshly made tomato sauce, garnished with basil

The biggest reason for this is that we all think that it will be very difficult to make it at home and I thought the same but only until I tried this recipe myself.

And trust me, this recipe is as simple as making Maggi, in fact it is definitely worth trying once.

Why you should not buy from shop’s and make it at home?

There’s not just one reason. But there are many, and that is why I have completely stopped buying from the market now. The biggest ridge is the preservatives. Check yourself that once they are made, there use-by (best before) dates on their packets for many months and sometimes for years too.

Storing Homemade Tomato Sauce – A glass jar filled with freshly made tomato sauce, sealed and ready for refrigeration.

No matter how expensive or branded the sauce you bring is, its taste will never be like home, and it will not be fresh at all either.

Ingredients for this simple-to-make but amazing-tasting homemade tomato sauce

Now let’s talk about the ingredients you will need for this recipe.

Ingredients for Tomato Sauce – A neatly arranged display of fresh tomatoes, garlic, onions, olive oil, and seasonings, ready to be blended into a classic tomato sauce.
  • Fresh tomatoes (4–5 medium-sized, ripe)
  • Garlic (3–4 cloves, finely chopped)
  • Onion (1 small, optional for sweetness)
  • Olive oil or any cooking oil (2 tbsp)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Black pepper (½ tsp)
  • Sugar (1 tsp, balances acidity)
  • Red chilli flakes (optional, for heat)
  • Dried oregano or basil (½ tsp for added aroma)

As usual, I have written a lot of ingredients in it, but you can do more or less of these ingredients according to your taste and choice, like if you do not like spicy, then remove the chilli flakes, or if you want absolutely authentic tomato sauce, then do not add oregano.

Step-by-Step Make This Tomato Sauce

Transformation of Ingredients to Sauce – Fresh tomatoes, garlic, and spices slowly simmering in a pan, transforming into a rich and flavorful tomato sauce.

1. Blanch the tomatoes

First of all, the easiest step is to wash all the tomatoes well and put them to boil in the least amount of water, in just two to three minutes you will see that the peels of the tomatoes have started to come off. At the same time, turn off the gas when the tomatoes cool down a little, then remove the peel and make a smooth paste.

2. Saute the garlic and onion

The second step is simpler than the first. All you have to do is heat a pan, add a little oil and add the chopped garlic and onion (if using) and fry till the onions turn light golden. If you are not adding onions, it is enough to fry for just 30 to 40 seconds.

3. Add the tomato puree

As soon as the onion turns golden brown, add the pre-prepared tomato puree to it and let it cook well for 10 to 12 minutes.

4. Season the sauce

After 10 to 12 minutes, when it seems that the tomato puree is now getting thicker, it can also take 15 minutes instead of 10 to 12. Add salt, black pepper, sugar, and red chili flakes (if using) let it cook; until becomes thick and takes the shape of tomato sauce.

Your tomato sauce is ready at this stage, but if you want:

5. Finish with herbs

Turn off the heat and add dried oregano or basil. Mix well and let the flavours settle. (These are completely optional add-ons, you can easily skip these)

Pro Tips to Get the Best Out of This Homemade Tomato Sauce

  1. Use ripe tomatoes—two things: they will boil very quickly, and they will give an authentic taste, and the most important thing, which is the perfect red colour of tomato sauce, will not come without them.
  2. Blend or crush, your choice – If you want, make a smooth paste in a mixer to make a perfectly market-like sauce or if you want, mash it with a masher to keep it a little chunky and home-style.
  3. Cool before storing – Keeps well in the fridge for 4–5 weeks If stored properly in sealed airtite containers.
